I must say I have been continually surprised since I joined BBB a few days ago at how slow the pages seem to load, compared with 2 or 3 other similar forums I visit regularly.
As yet I haven’t gotten around to objective timing comparisons, but it sure seems “noticeable” here – though “tolerable” ;).
(I’m on a broadband connection, but currently limited to aprox dialup speed, 56k).Eagle_KiwiMemberHi there Rae.
I’m not sure what became of DJ-H’s reply, but I see you still have no Profile picture – though you have a very nice avatar. 😉Are you still trying to sort this size thing out ? (because if so, I’m happy to help :))
Eagle_KiwiMemberHi Nick … and welcome to BBB (though I only arrived myself a few days ago!)
I’ve no idea, but I do just wonder, is this YOUR problem, or your FRIEND’s ?
Do you get IMs ok from other friends … and/or … is your friend able to IM OTHER people happily ?Eagle_KiwiMemberHmmm, this appears to be the de facto official thread for discussing the “Reputation” feature… so….
Are any comments I might put in the reputation window anonymous to the recipient – i.e. can they see it was ME that commented – or not ?
And further, I gather the recipient does see which thread gave rise to the comment, but not which exact post. Is that correct ?Eagle_KiwiMemberI’m very surprised to find online references alleging that Net2Phone Comm Center installs BarginBuddy. I believe Net2Phone is a perfectly legitimate internet telephony program (as miGs says), which has been around since 1996.
I notice on their website they clearly state “.. no spyware, adware, or popups..” (for what THAT may be worth ;))
The BarginBuddy references I can find all appear to be around 2002/2003, so perhaps that no longer applies ?Anyway, Net2Phone is what Yahoo have long used to power their “Call Center”, so while available as a standalone program it is also built in to Yahoo Messenger, and I’m sure that THIS form of Net2Phone has no connection with anything underhand.
Refer: http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/messenger/win/beta/voip/voip-03.html and http://web.net2phone.com/about/press/releases/20020220.aspEagle_KiwiMemberI can – but prefer not to – edit registry directly.
I know of 3 programs that can change YM Status messages.- MessyStuff, here: http://www.carbonize.co.uk/Yahoo/programs.php (I’ve never tried this one… just saw a link to it in BBB somewhere).
- X-Setup Pro, here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4083.html (this does the job well, but also can do a zillion other things too – Shareware, I think).
- EliteStatus, here: http://programmingsource.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewdownload&cid=14&POSTNUKESID=afec299992292115881855910bf08ae9 (I recommend this one – totally simple, just 14k, works perfectly. :))
Eagle_KiwiMemberThx 4 welcome Jeff. Nice to be here. Seems a real neat place! 🙂
Yahoo is not alone in overselling!
Pretty much a “ditto” from http://www.skype.com here  :Skype is for calling other people on their computers or phones. Download Skype and start calling for free all over the world.
Anyway, Yahoo doesn’t appear to quite match Skype rates (US residents pay US2c/min to call US – non-US folks, like me, seem strangely discriminated against, paying 10c/min!).
But having had insurmountable credit card problems with Skype in the past, I’ve now signed up and paid on Yahoo (in about 2 minutes!) then called – PC-to-Phone – a friend in USA, with absolutely no problem, and excellent voice quality.
I’m delighted! 😀Eagle_KiwiMemberHi all.
I’ve found you cannot tell with friends who are currently OFFLine, but for those ONLine in MOST cases I can figure whether or not they have Beta.Either -A- open IM window, and if they HAVEN’T got Beta it’ll tell me “xxx is using a different version – certain features unavailable”. If it DOESN’T say that, then they HAVE got the Beta.
Or -B- (quicker!) just right click the person. If they have Beta then all options are there – if they haven’t then some options (e.g. Call Computer) will be greyed out.HOWEVER… it’s not quite that simple! I have about 6 friends I know HAVE got the Beta. In each case the above tests apply.
BUT, when I apply those tests to other online friends, most show as non-Beta (probably correctly), but a FEW show as Beta, yet when I contact them they obviously HAVEN’T got it… haven’t even heard of it in most cases! Is this a bug ? Am I assuming too much ? And mainly, is there any way to work around this ??
(Sure, I could IM them and ask, but with hundreds that is not practical. It would be ideal if I could TRUST what I find just by checking each one as above).Eagle_KiwiMemberHi PK.
I assume you just have ONE PC connected to the dialup ? (as distinct from a home network, 2 or more) ?Net2Phone – that is kind of an “internal” thing YM uses, it’s just YM’s way of saying it can partly connect you, but not wholly (for some reason).
The other question I’d ask, is how/where are you getting in to this voice chat ? I presume using YM version 6 you’re just trying to open voice in an IM window ?
Have you tried “Invite to voice conference” option with a friend ?
… and/or, try getting the new YM 7 Beta – it can’t be any worse for you, and while the Voice Conf part is unchanged, they have a completely new function – named “Call” – replacing the voice facility in IM mode.
Perhaps IT would work for you !?Eagle_KiwiMember(Feb 27, 2005) ..Firstly its called PM not IM… IM’s are in aol and aim…
Hi SubStream – I don’t know where you get that idea from. I’ve been around a long time, and on Yahoo (and AIM, MSN, ICQ too, generally) I’ve only ever heard the term “IM” .
PalTalk is the only program I know that seems to try to promulgate the alternative “PM” (Personal Message) term.
IF indeed it IS “PM” in Yahoo… odd that even they NAME that particular window “Instant Message” !
Eagle_KiwiMemberHi there.
I’m just new to this forum, but very puzzled to find this thread, “ALL NEW YM”, which is apparently over a year old and refers to Beta 6 – which is NOT the “All New” any more. Surely that title belongs NOW (since 18 May 05) to Beta **7** !?Can this not be UNstickied, and perhaps a new – TOPICAL – thread opened ?
Eagle_KiwiMemberHi all.
First post on THIS forum. 🙂I have Aiptek PalmCam, which I think is same vintage etc as PenCam. It used to be fine on YM (and W98) – but then about a year ago suddenly (when I upgraded to YM 6??) nogo.
But I found/applied that neat registry change for “VFW” that ToeBee suggested, and YAHOOO!, it worked fine again. (And still works fine since I’ve upgraded to XP).
BTW, in YM Preferences my Camera Source is set NOT to the normal default for me (“USB Dual-Mode Camera”) but to: “Microsoft WDM Image Capture……”.
