I think the simple solution you all may be overlooking is that you need to re-login or reboot your machine for many of these to take effect. This is because many of these programs stay “running” when you “close” them. Reboot your machine and see where you are at.
SpecializedMemberSadly, 256mb of ram is not enough for many computers nowadays. With WindowsXP and all of the possible anti-spyware+adware programs you may be using, the ram gets used up fairly quickly. If you do not manage your memory well, you may be looking at a large paging file (where the harddrive acts as memory- slower because ram is almost always faster than any spinning/searching device). I have 1gb of ram and sometimes I find myself with a large page file (800mb+) and I question whether I should purchase more memory. If you are only using your computer for email and internet, I would suggest you trying another 256mb of ram and possibly putting them in dual-channel (that is, if your motherboard/ram supports DC ram). Other than what others suggested, decreasing your pagefile and increasing your physical amount of RAM is the only thing I can help, and justify.
SpecializedMembermckunt03, Try a few things: run a program which removes Spyware and Adware, such as Adaware SE. Make sure your computer isnt being bogged down by any unuseful programs or utilities that you dont use. Clear your Temporary Internet Files (IE->Tools->Options->”Delete Files”). If all else fails, buy more ram or overclock your CPU :D. This will be another lesson. If you have any further questions, visit the IRC channel-> irc.bigblueball.com; #bigblueball. Identify your problem and someone should come to your assistance. If I am there, I will most likely answer your question promptly. It is much easier to work with someone in real time than over a message board. Oh, also. Google’s Webaccelerator helps a bit if you have a broadband connection. link: http://www.google.com/webaccelerator

SpecializedMemberConsidering my previous post, I would highly consider buying a cooling pad since you probably dont want to mess around with soldering components and such. Or, solve the problem indefinitely by buying a larger, more powerful, and thus more power hungry desktop.
SpecializedMemberThe cooling of the laptop also depends on the air in which it receives in which to cool the laptop. If its getting hot air, it will only be blowing hot air across the components, likely heating them up within the first half hour of use. If you are near air ducts, try to keep the laptop away from indoor heat, as it is especially dangerous, both warm and dry. If you dont have the 20$ to spend on a cooling pad you can make yourself one out of a usb plug and a fan which runs on 5v. this concoction is in no way a liability for myself. If you make the USB adapter, get a plug from something you dont use anymore or order one online. then, connect the fan terminals to the usb plug and test out the fan. If you were good, the fan should work. Place it under the laptop and voila!
SpecializedMemberMegumi, please contact your ISP to have them check voltages to your modem(assuming its cable internet). I had a problem a few months ago where my modem wouldnt allow me to stay online for more than aprox. 5 hours. It seems that the voltages from the pole to my house were incorrect. Suggest this to the ISP when you talk to them on the phone, it may help them pinpoint or exclude a probable and possible cause of the problem. Good luck.
SpecializedMemberMegumi, try running a Spyware or Adware removal tool, such as Adaware SE Pro. Typically, modems do NOT block port 80, rather a piece of malicious software on the computer. Port 80 is HTTP. It is highly unlikely your modem has blocked this port, oh and if it did, then I would be curious to as how you posted this reply? =) Also, check https://bigblueball.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27445 where Sjoerd outlines what to for cleaning up your PC. If all else fails, visit the IRC chat; https://bigblueball.com/forums/chat/index.php?

SpecializedMemberI have had problems similar to this, I called COX, my ISP and they came out. They tested inside at the modem, at my router, and at my pc. They went out and tested at the pole, the problem appeared to be that the voltages were off from the pole to the house, this was causing my connection to be dropped from time to time. If you have your ISP come out (comcast) theyre usually very good about that sort of stuff, they can diagnose your problem very quickly/easily. Call them up and see what they can do, otherwise, as Dave said, your NIC may be shot or out of whack. Buy/find a new/old one and use it- see if it makes any difference.
SpecializedMemberActually, I think that the scenario miltonbulldog09 is describing is possible, if in fact you can make these “picture” cds that you speak of. But, why would you do this if you could just buy / use a few more cds. They go on sale almost every other week – you can get them for close to 10$/50-pack which is actually quite high considering I get mine on Black Friday- for free 😀

SpecializedMemberI recently bought a video card (Nvidia GeForce 6600GT VIVO Edition). This means that I can capture a digital feed via an s-video cable or analog via RGB cable with another available adapter. The card was only a few dollars more than a standard and I cannot see any difference in quality/performance. If youre in the market for a new video card, this may be the way (other option is ATI’s AllInWonder Series).
SpecializedMemberI use mIRC, and love it. Its easy to use, functional, and very adaptive
