MemberAustralia is doing so well. It’s massive news over here in a country that never gave soccer a second glance before Australia’s first ever world cup win in their first game against Japan. The first time Australia had even been in the world cup for 32 years where we didnt even get a single goal.
I had never bothered to watch a game of soccer, i really can’t stand it. But the other night i decided to watch the Aus – Japan game and even though we were down for about 80 minutes, the 3 goals in 8 minutes and the win was honestly one of the greatest sporting moments i have ever watched, and i will bet it will go down in history with the Americas Cup Victory etc. I also watched the Brazil – Aus and Aus – Croatia clashes where we didnt win but played very very well, amid very dodgy refereeing.
Anyway, we have gotten through our group with Brazil and the next game we have is against Italy. I will definetly be setting my alarm for another early morning game and no matter what happens, the Australian team will be comming home to Australia with a heck of a lot more respect and money for Soccer Australia.

MemberI don’t watch a lot of TV but some of my favourites would have to be Seinfeld, The Simpsons, Scrubs, Mythbusters, Top Gear, American Dad, Little Britain (sometimes), The Office and Spongebob Sqarepants (yes really 😛 ).

MemberJeff Thomson once said that the aim of a bowler when bowling a bouncer was to hurt the batsman.
“Truthfully, I enjoy hitting a batsman more than getting him out. It doesn’t worry me in the least to see a batsman hurt, rolling around screaming, blood on the pitch. I like to see blood on the pitch.”
That quote created a huge controversy then, and understandably so. I doubt that Thommo meant it, though. I think it would take just one incident like this for even the most ruthless fast bowler to stop wanting to hurt a batsman. You can have all the protective gear in the world, but a hard leather ball at 100mph can still cause unbelievable damage.
While searching for that quote by Thomson, I came across this funny (?) story about his bowling partner, the equally ferocious Dennis Lillee
“There is a famous story of Lillee delivering a swinging yorker into the pads of an opening batsman and yelling an appeal. The batsman was plumb and the umpire gave him out. Lillee was surprised when the player didn’t move but stood, propped on his bat, at the crease. “Owzat,” yelled Dennis again. “That’s out,” shouted the umpire. Still the batsman didn’t move. ”That’s out, you Pommie *******,” said Dennis. ”Now bugger off.” Whereupon the batsman said: “I’d love to, Dennis, but I can’t. You see, I think you’ve broken my bloody leg.” And he had.”

MemberIn Australia you can also get in legal trouble if your accountant does something ilegal in your income statements you have to submit to the government. I guess in a sense thats breaking the law if your not doing anything.
It’s a stupid question though.

Cultural difference = tensionI have no doubt that is true. As I said before, im sure the human race will wipe out itself in the next 1000 years for the same reason. I just don’t think it’s going to happen with a war involving a pro-democracy super power and a couple thousand rebels.
I’m talking super power on super power apolalyptic missile war. Not some street battle with machine guns and rpgs.
And back to the weather. like I said, We have been recording weather for such a short period of the earth’s history stats can be extmrley bias. Think of the last 500 years or whatever as an axtrmely extrmely small sample size. I’m not saying we are warming or not, just that we can’t be sure.

MemberSaying the Iraq war is a sign of the closing apocalypse would be pretty damn self-righteous. Wars are going on all over the world, all the time. Just because the world’s greatest super power is involved doesn’t means its apocalyptic or anything.
On the weather side, the jury is still out there. We have been recording global weather for such an extmrley short period of the Earth’s history we simply do not know. Although, we do know that gloably, the earth has gone through periods of global warmth and global freezing before we were even around. But I still don’t know.
However, I am sure humans and possibly the Earth will be gone in the next 1000 years and not because of any god. Humans are going to kill each other with our own technology. It’s that basic. Imagine 500 years from now, a cold war a billion times more intense, but this time, one country snaps and it’s no longer cold.

MemberI don’t fully understand what you are saying. Are you trying to say that there will be riots in Dublin because of these guys marching with “IRA victims”, or that there have been riots? Or that this Orange Order is a terrorist organisation or something?

MemberOnce again, all it is is extremism. I think if somebody was to draw ten or so derogatory cartoons of somone i respected and based my life around I would be quite offended. Muslim groups and leaders all over the world have expressed their feelings like this; to the media, on camera and with a statement written by a PR consultant. That’s boring and so we don’t see this.
What the media is showing is is 800 or so Islamic extremisits running through the streets burning Danish flags and abusing America (who knows why America gets the blame here). At some of these riots, muslim clerics were standing in the streets usging the protesters to stop. This is what the media is showing us because its more interesting than a few guys standing outside a mosque reading their PR statement.
Now we get non-muslisms over the world watching their TV’s and seeing these isolated riots in a few corners of the globe. Musilms are crazy we think. They don’t belive in free speech, I take offense but I don’t burn cars, my religion is therefore greater. More Musilm hate is expressed towards your average Muslim man or woman in the street. The cycle continues. It’s ridiuclous and its frustrating.
Back to the main topic, yeah freedom of expression is good. The thing people don’t realise, unfortunetly, is that freedom of speech ends at derogatory comments. The “everything i say will offend somone” argument is bull. I have to say having 8 or so cartoons depicting one of the most respected figures in the world is just stupid and a bit over the top. It’s going to offend people.
The crux of freddom of speech is scrutiny of the powerful and protection of your own rights in society. Using it to take shots at other religions (particularly in this day and age where Muslism are under the gun a bit) is going to cause problems.
And TåkØÐã, The Crusades was hardly Christian radicalism or terrorism.:)Qwerty
MemberI wouldn’t suggest buying CD’s for anyone unless you have an idea of what they like. There is so much out there it’s not worth the risk. Age is also too hard to judge by. The best thing to do would proaobbly get a music soundtrack to a game or movie you know they like.
